What is a cell phone carrier?

If you want lower prices without sacrificing major-network coverage, an MVNO cell phone provider may be the best fit. MVNOs lease space on the big networks and typically pass the savings on to customers. While they may not always include the premium perks of the Big Three, they often offer cheap phone plans with flexible data amounts.

In the United States, there are three major cell phone carriers: AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. These companies are sometimes referred to as “The Big Three” because they own and operate the largest nationwide networks. Alongside them, there are dozens of smaller providers known as MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators). MVNOs don’t own their own towers—instead, they lease coverage from one of the big networks and resell it under their own brand, often at lower prices.

Between the major wireless carriers and MVNO providers, consumers have a wide range of options for cell phone plans—from prepaid and budget-friendly choices to premium, unlimited plans packed with perks like streaming subscriptions, hotspot data, and international roaming.

Major Cell Phone Carriers in the U.S.

AT&T

AT&T is one of the most established names in telecommunications and the second-largest wireless carrier in the U.S. It was also the first to partner with Apple for the launch of the original iPhone.

  • Coverage: AT&T delivers reliable nationwide 4G LTE coverage (around 68%) and has mid-range 5G coverage (about 30%).
  • Plans: AT&T offers both prepaid and postpaid options, but its unlimited phone plans are its most popular offerings. While AT&T is often the priciest of the Big Three, it frequently runs aggressive phone deals—including trade-in offers and free phone promotions—that can make switching worthwhile.
  • Best For: Customers looking for strong coverage, premium devices, and frequent phone discounts.

T-Mobile

T-Mobile is the second-largest mobile carrier in the U.S. and is widely known for competitive pricing and customer-friendly perks.

  • Coverage: T-Mobile’s 4G LTE coverage (62%) trails AT&T and Verizon, especially in rural areas, but its 5G network is the largest and fastest in the nation, covering over 50% of the country.
  • Plans: T-Mobile focuses on unlimited data plans, many of which include perks like free Netflix, international talk and text, and premium data speeds. Its prepaid options also appeal to budget-conscious customers.
  • Best For: Heavy data users, international travelers, and customers who want the fastest 5G speeds.

Verizon

Verizon is the largest cell phone carrier in the U.S. and has long been recognized for industry-leading network reliability.

Small Phone Carriers: MVNOs

If you want lower prices without sacrificing major network coverage, an MVNO cell phone provider may be the best fit. MVNOs lease space on the big networks and typically pass the savings on to customers. While they may not always include the premium perks of the Big Three, they often offer affordable phone plans with flexible data allowances.

We've tested the major MVNOs and found a few that deliver on value:

  • Mint Mobile (T-Mobile's network): Mint Mobile is known for affordable prepaid plans, multi-month discounts, free calling to Mexico and Canada, and mobile hotspot access.
  • Visible (Verizon network): Owned by Verizon, Visible offers unlimited talk, text, and data starting at just $25/month, plus hotspot and international calling to Mexico and Canada.
  • US Mobile (all three networks): US Mobile offers flexibility with build-your-own plans or unlimited options, including premium data, family plan discounts, and perks such as streaming services.

Choosing the Right Cell Phone Carrier

To determine the best cell phone carrier or mobile provider for you, you'll need to consider:

  • Coverage in your area: Always check carrier coverage maps before you switch.
  • Your data usage: Light users may save with prepaid plans, while heavy data users often benefit from unlimited options.
  • Budget and perks: MVNOs typically cost less, while major carriers often bundle extras like streaming subscriptions, phone deals, and hotspot data.

Whether you go with a major carrier like Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile, or choose a smaller MVNO like Mint, Visible, or US Mobile, you’ll find a plan tailored to your needs. For more comparisons, explore our guides:
