Compare Visible vs. Verizon:

Verizon is one of the largest cell phone carriers—and that's not even factoring in all of the small-carrier MVNOs that it owns. One such Verizon-owned virtual network operator is Visible

The prepaid carrier gives you a way to enjoy Verizon network coverage without paying Verizon's typically sky-high prices. But does Visible really stand up to its parent company? We think it does.

Let's take a closer look at Verizon and Visible and compare their plan details, prices, coverage, and more to see how the two carriers stack up against each other.

Keep reading and find out which is best for you.

Visible vs. Verizon summary

Verizon owns Visible, but the carriers are different in a huge way. Visible is a prepaid carrier made for anyone who wants the dependable service of the Verizon network at great discount prices. Verizon is for those who want the comfort of having the most high-speed data, even if it means paying a premium price.

Visible Plans Verizon Plans

TL;DR - Visible and Verizon pros and cons

Here are the most important details to know about Visible and Verizon.

Visible:
  • Unlimited data and mobile hotspot (speeds capped)
  • Verizon 5G network
  • Great prices and promotions
  • Annual plans for extra savings
  • No family plans or device installments
  • No streaming perks
  • Data deprioritization (basic plan)
Verizon:
  • Excellent unlimited plans
  • High-speed mobile hotspots
  • Perks for $10/each
  • Verizon 5G network
  • Device installments (requires contract)
  • Expensive plans
  • Unappealing prepaid plans

Visible vs. Verizon: Coverage

Visible operates on Verizon's network, meaning they have the exact same coverage. The Verizon 4G LTE network covers just over 70% of the country (more than any other network), while its 5G network covers only 13% (behind T-Mobile and AT&T). The Verizon network is a great choice for customers who live in rural areas as their 4G LTE network is so vast.

Check out the interactive coverage map below to see just how widespread Verizon's (and Visible's) coverage is. Zoom into your city and toggle between 4G and 5G coverage. If you see that your neighborhood is saturated with purple, it's safe to say Verizon and Visible have strong coverage where you live.

Bottom line: Get the same coverage for half the price

Many people don't realize that you can get the exact same coverage as you would from a Verizon plan by going with a much cheaper MVNO like Visible. Other Verizon network carriers include US Mobile, which offers unlimited everything with Big Red's 4G and 5G coverage starting at just $29/month. We especially love that you can switch from a monthly to an annual plan and lower your costs even further.

Visible vs. Verizon: Price

The big selling point for Visible is that it offers its plans on the Verizon network at lower rates, making Visible cheaper than Verizon. For one line of Verizon's cheapest plan, Unlimited Welcome, you'll pay $65/month. On the flip side, Visible's base plan—which is pretty similar (they both have unlimited data that could be slowed during heavy network congestion)—starts at just $25/month. You can save even more overall by picking one of Visible's plans as an annual plan

Take a look at this table to see how Visible's plans compare to Verizon's unlimited plans.

Visible vs. Verizon prices
Carrier Plan Price
Verizon Visible plan $25/month See plan
Verizon Visible +plan $35/month See plan
Verizon Visible+ Pro plan $45/month See plan
Verizon Annual Visible plan  $275/year See plan
Verizon Annual Visible+ plan $375/year See plan

Verizon Unlimited Welcome plan $65/month See plan

Visible is Verizon's answer to budget-friendly carriers. Something would really be wrong if Visible didn't win this category.

What about Verizon Prepaid?

Verizon has some prepaid options that can be less expensive than its postpaid plans. However, we strongly suggest that if you want prepaid Verizon, just head over to Visible. The plans are cheaper and in general, they are better. Just as an example, Verizon Prepaid's cheapest plan is $35 and it is not unlimited like Visible's $25 Plan is. Even Visible's best unlimited plan is still cheaper than Verizon's most affordable prepaid unlimited offering.

Visible vs. Verizon: Perks

Verizon used to include some of the best perks with its plans; however, the carrier has moved away from this all-inclusive model and instead now offers select add-on perks at a discount. For example, you can pay just $10/month for the Disney+, Hulu, ESPN Select bundle (regularly $12.99/month). Some other extras include Apple Music, Apple One, Verizon +play (discounts on streaming/app subscriptions like Max, Netflix, and Xbox Game Pass), and more.

Being a discount brand, Visible never included these types of big perks with its plans—that's partly why they're able to offer Verizon-caliber coverage at a much lower cost. One small perk of Visible is you can save even more by selecting an annual plan. These plans are initially more expensive, but you save over the course of a year.

Because Verizon has the option to pay for perks and Visible doesn't have any at all, Verizon wins by default, but perks are becoming much less of a deal than they were before.

Visible vs. Verizon: High-speed data

You are simply never going to get the same access to high-speed data with one of the smaller carriers as you do with the major carriers. If the network is congested and you're on an MVNO, your service will be slowed. This is the biggest downside to any MVNO, and Visible is not immune.

If you choose the mid- or top-tier Visible+ or Visible+ Pro plan, you'll unlimited premium data. But keep in mind the basic $25 Visible plan doesn't include premium data, and is best for low-data users.

Verizon offers also unlimited premium data with its higher-tiered unlimited plans. It's very clear to see here that Verizon is the carrier to go to if you want as much high-speed data as possible given the fan-favorite base Visible plan doesn't have premium.

Visible vs. Verizon: Mobile hotspot data

Both of these carriers have their strong points when it comes to hotspot data. Visible's mobile hotspots are unlimited with one big caveat: Visible's hotspot speeds are capped at 5Mbps, 10Mbps, or 15Mbps, depending on your plan. Despite this, Visible's $45 plan is our pick for the best unlimited hotspot plan on the market.

In general, Visible's speeds are fast enough to handle most everyday internet tasks; however, if you are a gamer or you like to watch streaming video in ultra HD, you might find Visible's hotspot to be a little too slow.

Verizon allows you to use its network speeds to the fullest potential for hotspot, but only so much of it. With Unlimited Ultimate, you get a massive 60GB mobile hotspot allowance. On the Unlimited Plus plan, you'll get 30GB of premium hotspot data, but hotspot is not included in Unlimited Starter. You can pay $10/month extra (on either Unlimited Welcome or Unlimited Starter) for a 100GB hotspot perk.

As much as we appreciate Visible's unlimited hotspot, the 5Mbps speed, while adequate, isn't very appealing. If mobile hotspot is your priority, Verizon is probably your best bet.

Visible vs. Verizon: Family plans

Family plans can be a great way to save money. The more lines on a plan, the less you pay per line. Typically, the major carriers offer the biggest multi-line discounts while MVNO family plans are a little harder to find. Visible doesn't offer a family plan. So, there's not much to compare in this category. That said, you can still move your family to Visible. In general, multiple individual Visible lines are still cheaper overall than Verizon's family plans.

Verizon's multi-line discounts are still pretty generous. In fact, if you have four lines, you could be paying just a little more per line as you do with similar Visible plans. Here's a look at Verizon's family plans

Verizon family plans: Price per line
Plan2 lines3 lines4 lines
Unlimited Welcome$55/month$40/month$30/month
Unlimited Plus$70/month$55/month$45/month
Unlimited Ultimate$80/month$65/month$55/month

Family plans vs. no family plan: Verizon would seem to get the automatic win here, but take a look at those numbers again. You'd need four lines to be paying as little per line as you would on Visible—that's just how low the carrier's normal prices are. Granted, you do get more premium data with Verizon's Unlimited Plus plan. That said, we'll call this one a tie.

Visible vs. Verizon: Customer service

I perhaps am a little biased here, but I have spent hours frustrated with Verizon's customer service. I have also tested out Visible and spent minutes with its customer service team. Guess which experience was more pleasurable.

Yes, I'm just one person, but this follows the very commonly held belief that the big telecom companies are just horrible when it comes to customer service. Sure, Verizon owns Visible, but a totally separate team runs the smaller company, and while nobody is exactly excited about its customer service, it is a bit more responsive and a whole lot less frustrating than its parent company's customer service.

Visible is the winner when it comes to customer service.

Recap: Visible vs. Verizon

The story of Visible versus Verizon is really a story of premium data versus low prices. If you are a heavy mobile data user, you're probably going to want a plan like Verizon's Unlimited Plus or Unlimited Ultimate which both come with unlimited premium data. If you want the absolute cheapest plan that is still very much serviceable, you'll go with Visible's $25 base plan.

Coverage on both carriers is the same, and Verizon pretty much took included perks off the table (though you technically can save money with its discounted add-ons). Outside of premium data limits and prices, the two carriers look pretty similar—which, of course, isn't a huge surprise. They are parent company and subsidiary after all.

We think most people would be pretty happy switching to Visible.  With its lower prices, we recommend you try them before settling on the bigger carrier. If you absolutely need all that unlimited premium data, then you might want to pick Verizon instead.
