AT&T and T-Mobile have jumped into the internet race by offering home internet service through their 5G networks. AT&T Internet Air and T-Mobile 5G Home Internet use the same wireless networks as your smartphones to provide home internet service. But which 5G Home Internet service is the best?
T-Mobile 5G Home Internet gives most people the best option because it’s more widely available and extremely reliable. AT&T Internet Air offers solid speeds and a similar price range, but its limited availability means many homes can’t sign up.
Let's dive into these two internet options to see if 5G internet is right for you and which provider meets your needs.
Is AT&T Internet Air or T-Mobile 5G Home cheaper?

|---|---|---|
| Price | $60/month | $50/month |

When choosing between AT&T Internet Air and T-Mobile 5G Home, their similar costs likely won’t sway you to one service over the other. Bundling your internet service with your wireless plan can save you a bit extra from either brand, but the deepest discounts are only available with their most expensive phone plans.
AT&T Internet Air plans
AT&T offers one 5G home internet plan: AT&T Internet Air. It starts at $60 per month and includes unlimited data. Its speed ranges from 75Mbps to 225Mbps, which is fast enough for virtually any internet task, including streaming, gaming, or browsing social media.
AT&T wireless customers with an eligible plan can snag a 20% discount on Internet Air. That brings the cost down to around $48/month.
You can snag the bundling discount with all of AT&T’s postpaid wireless plans:
T-Mobile 5G Home Internet plans
T-Mobile offers a few different internet plans:
- Rely Internet for $50/month
- Amplified Internet for $60/month
- All-In Internet for $70/month
The internet portion of these plans is the same. All T-Mobile plans offer unlimited 5G internet service with data speeds ranging from 72Mbps to 245Mbps. All of T-Mobile's 5G Home Internet plans include a Wi-Fi mesh system that extends the reach of your internet signal. Truthfully, most customers won’t need the extra-wide mesh coverage unless they own a larger home, but it's a decent perk.
You can score a $15 discount for T-Mobile’s internet bundle when you pair one of T-Mobile's 5G internet plans with a wireless mobile line.
Here's a list of eligible postpaid plans you can bundle with internet:
Existing users on the following plans can also pair a mobile phone with 5G internet service:
Is bundling wireless and internet a good idea?
Bundling your wireless phone and internet plans is a good idea if you already get both services from the same provider. However, don’t be fooled into paying for a more expensive wireless plan just to get an internet discount.
If you don’t need a large unlimited plan from a major carrier, it can be cheaper to pay full price for an internet plan and get a simpler phone plan from a smaller carrier. For example, paying for one line of Experience More and a T-Mobile Rely Internet 5G Home Internet will cost $135 a month overall. Mint Mobile offers an unlimited plan on T-Mobile’s network with 35GB of premium data for just $30 a month. Picking that plan and paying full price for T-Mobile’s internet would only cost $80 a month.
Coverage and availability
AT&T Internet Air and T-Mobile 5G Home use each carrier’s 5G wireless network to provide internet service. That said, T-Mobile 5G Home Internet is more widely available than AT&T Internet Air across the U.S.
T-Mobile 5G Home Internet coverage map
T-Mobile 5G Home Internet plans are available if you live in an area with strong 5G coverage. AT&T’s Internet Air service is much more limited. It’s true AT&T has the nation’s second-largest 5G network, but the carrier does not extend internet service throughout its coverage area. Instead, AT&T Internet Air is limited to select cities with strong 5G coverage.
AT&T’s primary internet offerings are fiber plans. Its 5G internet plan essentially just serves households who can’t hook up to its ultra-fast fiber network.
Is AT&T Fiber better than AT&T Internet Air?
Yes, AT&T’s fiber internet is better than AT&T Internet Air. Fiber internet is more reliable and offers much faster speeds than 5G wireless internet. Even better, AT&T’s cheapest fiber plans offer faster download speeds than AT&T Internet Air—and T-Mobile 5G Home—for around the same cost.
In fact, two WhistleOut staffers have AT&T fiber and absolutely love it. Hop over to our AT&T internet review to read about their experiences in detail.
Overall, if you can hook up to AT&T’s fiber network, it’s a better choice than AT&T Internet Air or T-Mobile 5G Home Internet.
Is AT&T or T-Mobile the faster 5G Home Internet provdier?
Both internet services include truly unlimited data and offer similar speed ranges.
- AT&T Internet Air ranges from 75–225Mbps
- T-Mobile 5G Home ranges from 75–245Mbps
We consider T-Mobile to have slightly faster speeds and better reliability because of its larger 5G network. We saw average download speeds around 100Mbps during our T-Mobile 5G Internet testing. That said, keep in mind your individual experience with these plans will depend on your location. The closer you are to a 5G tower, the faster your speeds and the more reliable your service will be overall.
If you already have a phone plan with AT&T or T-Mobile, testing your data speeds can give you a good idea of how fast 5G internet may be in your home. Try out our speed test below:
5G Home Internet equipment and installation
Both AT&T and T-Mobile include 5G wireless gateways for free as part of their plans. Neither one stands out as better than the other.
Installation is also easy. It’s a self-install process, so there’s no need to schedule an appointment with a service technician. Simply plug the gateway in and it will automatically connect to the 5G network. You may need to try it in several locations in your home to find the strongest signal, but there’s no need to worry about the gateway facing a certain direction like with satellite internet dishes.
Customer service
As massive telecom companies, AT&T and T-Mobile have several avenues for customer service including phone numbers, live online chat, and support sites.
Truthfully, many customers complain about both provider’s customer service. AT&T’s customer service has a rating of 1.3 on TrustPilot with most customers complaining about wait times. T-Mobile’s customer service is currently rated as 1.4 on TrustPilot with many customers citing issues with collecting discounts or phone plan prices changing. The good news is that most customers don’t complain about the Internet services themselves. The issue is getting timely help when problems happen.

Recap: T-Mobile 5G Home Internet is best
When compared with AT&T, we rank T-Mobile 5G Home Internet as the best option for wireless internet service. It’s widely available, offers fast speeds, and has competitive pricing. It can also be bundled with T-Mobile’s lineup of phone plans for even more savings.
None of this is to say AT&T Internet Air is bad. It just has limited availability and many customers won’t be able to purchase a plan. If you’re already an AT&T wireless customer and live in an area where it's available, it’s an excellent choice for internet service—but also check for AT&T fiber, which gives you faster speeds and more reliable service than 5G.
