5G internet uses the same wireless networks as your smartphone to provide a home internet plan. Verizon 5G Home Internet and T-Mobile 5G Home Internet offer two of the most popular wireless internet services.

Both services give you top features for your home internet:

  • Verizon 5G Home offers the fastest download speeds of any 5G internet plan, but it’s expensive and limited to urban areas.
  • T-Mobile 5G Home is the cheaper option and more widely available—but its top speeds of 245Mbps come nowhere close to Verizon’s 1,000Mbps.

Let's dive into these two internet plans to determine which provider is best for you.

Get to the point: Is T-Mobile or Verizon 5G Home cheaper?

T-Mobile 5G Home Internet is cheaper outright than Verizon 5G Home. However, you can save on Verizon with a wireless and 5G internet bundle.

T-Mobile 5G Home Verizon 5G Home Verizon 5G Home Plus
Price $50/month $60/month $80/month
Price w/ wireless bundle $35-55/month $35/month $45/month

If cost is your most important factor, T-Mobile’s 5G internet plan at $50 a month is cheaper than either of Verizon’s options. That said, taking advantage of bundling changes the story. Bundling the base-level Verizon 5G Home Internet plan with an eligible wireless plan lowers the price of internet service to just $35 a month.

T-Mobile 5G Home Internet plans

T-Mobile offers a few different internet plans:

The internet portion of these plans is the same. All T-Mobile plans offer unlimited 5G internet service with data speeds up to 400Mbps. All of T-Mobile's 5G Home Internet plans include a Wi-Fi mesh system that extends the reach of your internet signal. Truthfully, most customers won’t need the extra-wide mesh coverage unless they own a larger home, but it's a decent perk.

You can score a $15 discount for T-Mobile’s internet bundle when you pair one of T-Mobile's 5G internet plans with a wireless mobile line.

Verizon 5G Home Internet plans

Verizon offers two 5G internet plans with different pricing and speed tiers:

Verizon 5G Home starts at $60 a month and offers download speeds from 85 to 300Mbps.

Verizon 5G Home Plus starts at $80 a month and includes download speeds from 300 to 1,000Mbps. Not only does Verizon offer incredibly fast speeds, but customers also receive UHD 4K video streaming capabilities and a three-year price lock.

Both of these plans receive a significant discount when bundled with a Verizon wireless plan that includes 5G Ultra Wideband. Verizon offers two plans with that feature: Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Ultimate.

Bundling Verizon 5G Home internet with either of those wireless plans drops the bill you’ll pay:

  • Verizon 5G Home lowers to $35/month
  • Verizon 5G Home Plus lowers to $45/month

Is Verizon or T-Mobile 5G available where you live?

Verizon and T-Mobile 5G Home rely on each carrier’s 5G wireless network for service. Between the two, T-Mobile has much more 5G coverage and availability.

T-Mobile 5G Home Internet plans are available if you live in an area with strong 5G coverage. Since T-Mobile’s 5G network is the largest in the nation and blankets 53% of the country with service, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to purchase a plan. Check out our T-Mobile 5G Home Internet coverage guide to see if you can sign up.

Verizon’s 5G coverage is the smallest of any major carrier operating in just 12% of the country. The 5G coverage centers around urban areas, meaning much of the nation’s population will have access to Verizon 5G. That said, once you leave a city, you’ll likely drop to Verizon’s 4G LTE network.

These coverage gaps mean Verizon 5G Home internet is only available to customers living in select cities across the nation where Verizon’s 5G infrastructure exists.

Which 5G Home Internet provider is faster?

Both internet services include truly unlimited data, but Verizon’s potential speeds are faster than T-Mobile’s:

  • T-Mobile 5G Home ranges from 75–245Mbps
  • Verizon 5G Home ranges from 80–300Mbps
  • Verizon 5G Home Plus ranges from 300–1,000Mbps

Verizon’s top plan has the fastest speeds of any 5G internet plan and even rivals offerings from some cable and fiber internet plans. Download speeds of 1,000Mbps will let you do virtually any internet task from playing competitive video games to 4K streaming.

T-Mobile’s speeds—and Verizon’s lower tier speeds—are also solid for most people. While they may not be good enough for data-intensive tasks, they’ll work fine for HD streaming, working from home, and browsing social media. When testing the service for our T-Mobile 5G Home Internet review, we saw average download speeds around 100Mbps.

You should note your individual experience with both services will depend on where you live. Not every location will offer the fastest speeds. Generally, the closer you live to a 5G tower, the faster your speeds and the more reliable your service will be overall.

If you already have a phone plan with Verizon or T-Mobile, testing your data speeds can give you a good idea of how fast 5G internet may be in your home. Check them with our speed test:

Equipment and installation

Both Verizon and T-Mobile include 5G wireless gateways for free as part of their plans. The main difference between the two is that the T-Mobile Home Internet plans provide a mesh Wi-Fi system.

Both services use a self-install process, making installation easy for you to do yourself. There’s no need to schedule an appointment with a service technician. Simply plug the gateway in and it will automatically connect to the 5G network and start providing Wi-Fi. You may need to try it in several locations in your home to find the strongest signal, but there’s no need to worry about the gateway facing a certain direction like with satellite internet dishes.

Customer service

Verizon and T-Mobile have several avenues for customer service including phone numbers, live online chat, and technical support sites.

Overall, customers don’t love the telecom giants’ customer service. We’ve all experienced what it’s like to be stuck on hold waiting for help. Verizon’s customer service has a rating of 1.2 on TrustPilot. Many customers complained about their difficulties connecting to a human agent instead of a robot. Pro tip: We have a Verizon customer service guide to help you avoid that problem.

T-Mobile’s customer service has a 1.4 on TrustPilot with customers citing issues with collecting discounts and changing phone plan prices. That’s not surprising as T-Mobile has raised prices across the board over the past two years.

Recap: Pick Verizon for speeds and T-Mobile for cost

Verizon’s and T-Mobile’s 5G internet services both have strengths. For most customers, it will be a story of speed versus cost. Which is best for you depends on your needs.

For customers looking for the fastest speeds, the Verizon 5G Internet Plus plan offers download speeds up to 1,000Mbps. Just remember that Verizon costs you more and might not be an option for you since it’s not available outside of select cities.

T-Mobile 5G Home Internet offers lower prices as the best option for budget-conscious customers. While T-Mobile has slower speeds, it’s also more widely available because of T-Mobile’s massive 5G network. For customers in the suburbs or rural areas away from the fastest towers, it will likely be the better—if not the only—choice.
