So, what do these coverage numbers mean for you? Well, they don't mean much if you don't live in those stretches of covered land. That's why before you make the switch to T-Mobile, you'll need to make sure you are covered by their network and live somewhere with strong T-Mobile signal strength. Let's examine T-Mobile's coverage maps, including its coverage compared to Verizon and AT&T, as well as which cities and states are sprinkled with the most T-Mobile towers.
Get T-Mobile coverage for half the cost
Many people don't realize they can save on a phone and a phone plan and still get T-Mobile coverage with an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator). These carriers use the same towers but don't have to pay for the upkeep costs, thereby passing the savings on to you. Where most free phones from T-Mobile require a new line (or upgrade) on one of their priciest phone plans, an MVNO like Mint Mobile has plans starting as low as $15/month.
With Mint Mobile, you'll get the nation's best 5G (with up to 35GB of guaranteed high speeds), plus unlimited talk, text, and data for a third of the cost of a T-Mobile unlimited plan. And while it's rare to find a truly free phone deal from Mint, you can often find discounted phones or full-priced devices that come with a few months of free service, which save you money in the long run.

T-Mobile coverage map
T-Mobile's 4G LTE network covers a respectable 62% of the United States—its next competitor, AT&T, is only 6% ahead in nationwide coverage. It especially shines in urban cities and areas with medium to large populations. Because of this, T-Mobile claims it covers 99% of Americans with its 4G and 3G networks since the carrier has focused on providing excellent service to places where many people live.
Where 5G is concerned, T-Mobile’s network is far and away the best. Only T-Mobile towers have a 5G footprint that touches every state in the United States. T-Mobile’s 5G coverage map extends to over 7,500 U.S. cities and provides 5G access to over 40% of the country.
Where the network suffers is in rural areas. As T-Mobile's coverage map shows, the eastern half of the U.S. enjoys robust network coverage, with just a couple of lighter coverage pockets along the Appalachians. But once you reach the middle of the country, significant coverage gaps begin to pop up, extending all the way to the West Coast.

T-Mobile 5G coverage map
T-Mobile continues to crush the competition in nationwide 5G network coverage—in fact, the Un-carrier's footprint has grown 4.6% just in the last few months as it works to expand the T-Mobile towers that support 5G. Here's how the numbers break down:
- T-Mobile: 41.35% 5G coverage
- AT&T: 18.11% 5G coverage
- Verizon: 11.08% 5G coverage
To access T-Mobile’s 5G coverage, you’ll first need to ensure you have a capable wireless plan and a 5G-compatible smartphone, like the latest iPhone 16 series or the flagship Samsung Galaxy S23 lineup.
Why is T-Mobile's 5G so good?
In short, because of its primarily low-band infrastructure. T-Mobile's 5G network offers higher reliability than the mid-band and high-band networks of AT&T and Verizon, though both carriers have made big gains in recent months.
That said, T-Mobile's low-band network is essentially a jazzed-up 4G LTE network, with speeds just slightly exceeding peak 4G performance. However, this is likely to change as T-Mobile repurposes Sprint’s 5G infrastructure to enhance its own 5G service. The carrier calls this the "Goldilocks" spectrum, as it offers the perfect balance between robust coverage and faster speeds.
T-Mobile 4G coverage map
Here's how T-Mobile's 4G LTE coverage breaks down compared to the other major carriers:
- Verizon: 70% 4G LTE coverage
- AT&T: 68% 4G LTE coverage
- T-Mobile: 62% LTE 4G coverage
While T-Mobile’s LTE coverage comes in third place among the Big Three, the carrier has made significant gains in the last couple of years and is within just 6% of second-best AT&T and 8% of front-runner Verizon.
How good is T-Mobile's coverage overall?
For most Americans, T-Mobile's coverage is excellent. A mere 8% difference in nationwide area coverage between the first- and third-place networks is very little in terms of population coverage. As mentioned, T-Mobile provides network service to 99% of Americans, offering fast 4G LTE speeds and broad 5G coverage. Its 5G speeds may not be the fastest on the market, but we've found that even the marginal uptick is noticeable when loading web pages and downloading apps to your phone.
Conversely, T-Mobile lacks coverage within certain rural pockets of the country—and unfortunately, the incorporation of Sprint's network won't help matters. Sprint's 4G coverage was even poorer than T-Mobile's, so it will take significant infrastructure upgrades before rural residents will see improvements in T-Mobile service. If you live in the mountains or pretty much anywhere in the rural Midwest and West Coast, you'll be better served by a different carrier.

T-Mobile coverage struggles in rural America
The lack of robust 3G and 4G infrastructure in rural America is a huge part of why T-Mobile's network coverage simply doesn't cut it for those who live in less populated areas. In fact, the following states all have less than half their area covered by T-Mobile's network:
- Alaska: 0% coverage
- Nebraska: 20% coverage
- Oregon: 43% coverage
- Maine: 43% coverage
- West Virginia: 43% coverage
T-Mobile does provide coverage in some of these areas through partner networks. However, that service is inconsistent and, therefore, less reliable than service coming directly from the T-Mobile network.
T-Mobile international coverage
Although T-Mobile doesn't have its own towers in other countries, it partners with prominent international carriers to offer service to its customers while abroad.
T-Mobile stands out for having more high-speed international coverage than any other carrier, as well as:
- Coverage in over 215+ destinations
- 5GB of free high-speed data each month (up to 5G speeds where available), depending on your plan
- Doubled speeds worldwide (from 128kbps to 256kbps)
T-Mobile coverage in Canada and Mexico will be similar to coverage in the U.S., with unlimited data, talk, text, and data on most phone plans. 5G access will depend on location, but you can count on 4G coverage in most major cities.
Of course, accessing T-Mobile's best international coverage will depend on where you're heading, your T-Mobile phone plan, and whether or not you purchase an International Data Pass. For more specifics on coverage abroad visit T-Mobile to review coverage in your desired destination.
T-Mobile coverage vs. AT&T and Verizon
The coverage map shows why T-Mobile ranks third in terms of nationwide 4G LTE coverage. While a good portion of the country is covered with purple—i.e., T-Mobile coverage—there are significant gaps in Nebraska, Nevada, Idaho, and Oregon. However, we tested T-Mobile's service in Idaho, where T-Mobile is actively expanding coverage and experienced speeds of up to 174.86 Mbps near a 5G tower.
Additionally, T-Mobile's 5G network rollout makes it the first carrier to offer nationwide 5G coverage, further improving T-Mobile's coverage map.

Look out, AT&T: T-Mobile is right on your heels. The Un-Carrier's 62% 4G LTE coverage is a mere 6% behind AT&T's 68% 4G LTE coverage across the U.S. And T-Mobile's 5G network far surpasses AT&T, which relies strictly on the mid-band spectrum to bring faster speeds to its customers. But as you can see, rural residents will benefit from AT&T's broader coverage in less populated areas.

Verizon has been the perennial coverage leader for some time now, canvassing 70% of the U.S. with its 4G LTE network. But T-Mobile is in a better position now than in years past, with only 8% separating the two.
Still, T-Mobile absolutely dominates Verizon when it comes to 5G—in coverage area, that is. Verizon's mid- and high-band 5G network is significantly faster than T-Mobile's, but only a fraction of the country will be able to experience those blazing-fast speeds. So for now, we give the 5G win to T-Mobile.
Small carriers that use T-Mobile's network
The best part about T-Mobile's robust network is that you don't have to buy a plan from them to enjoy solid coverage. Several smaller carriers, known as MVNOs, use T-Mobile towers to provide cell service at a much lower cost.
Our favorite T-Mobile MVNO is Mint Mobile with plans ranging from 5GB to unlimited data for as low as $15/month.
