Utah is home to some of the most stunning natural areas in the nation. With sweeping deserts and rugged mountains touching almost every corner of the state, it's a paradise for people who love the outdoors. Even Salt Lake City, the hub of Utah's population, sits surrounded by the Great Salt Lake and Wasatch Mountains. That said, deserts, lakes, and mountains don't often translate to good cell phone service.
So, which carrier offers the best phone service in Utah? We’ve compared coverage maps and discovered you can find service from at least one carrier in almost every populated area of the state. However, if you like to venture off the beaten path into Utah's world-class national parks, you may struggle to find a signal.
WhistleOut's coverage check feature shows what signal strength is like at your current location. Type in your address and we do the rest. In addition to showing you a map of your area with the coverage from the major carriers, we filter through the available cell phone plans and present only those from carriers who provide good reception at your location.
Whether you’re considering moving to Utah or just planning a visit, let’s see who has the best 4G LTE and 5G coverage.
About phone coverage in Utah
The name "Utah" originates from the Native American "Ute" tribe, which means "people of the mountains." If you've ever been to Utah, you'll know that's a perfect name. The state is full of scenic ranges from the stone walls of Arches, Canyonlands, and Zion National Parks to the snowcapped Wasatch Mountains around Salt Lake City. Whether you're hiking in the desert or hitting the slopes for some skiing, you'll probably be near a hill of some kind.
How does that translate to phone service? Well, it's a challenge. Phone signals struggle in mountainous areas because they can't travel through the hills. That said, most of these rugged areas with poor service are sparsely populated. In the cities where most people live there is excellent service from all three major carriers (AT&T, Verizon, & T-Mobile.)
AT&T offers the strongest overall coverage in Utah. It includes a strong signal in urban areas and covers a surprising amount of rural, rugged terrain. T-Mobile owns the largest 5G network and offers a solid signal in urban areas, but struggles in rural areas. Verizon is a balanced carrier that has excellent rural 4G LTE coverage and urban 5G coverage.
Why it's important to pick the right coverage
Most of the territory in Utah is undeveloped. You want a network and plan that will cover you both in the cities and wherever you travel.

AT&T network coverage in Utah
AT&T offers the largest 4G LTE network in Utah covering 80.4% of the state. For a state with a ton of rugged and rural areas, that's great coverage. The only places where AT&T struggles to give any kind of service are in the southern part of the state around Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and the desert areas of the northwest.
The AT&T 5G network is solid in Utah. It comes in second place behind T-Mobile by covering 30.72% of the state. That may not seem like a lot, but AT&T has coverage in the areas that count. Those are the developed places where most people live, like Salt Lake City, Provo, and tourist towns like Moab.
Best AT&T phone plan
AT&T’s footprint makes it the top choice for wireless service in Utah. Our favorite AT&T cell phone plan is its Premium 2.0 option, which includes unlimited talk, text, and data with truly unlimited premium high-speed data. Plus, there's also a 100GB mobile hotspot.
If you’re not a fan of postpaid plans, you can also check out the best AT&T prepaid plans. You can also grab some family and friends, and hop on an AT&T family plan for a competitive multi-line discount. Consider an AT&T bundle deal that saves you money if you need home internet.
Best phone plans on AT&T's network
If you want to use AT&T’s network but don't want to pay top dollar, there are plenty of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) that help you save. These small carriers piggyback off of the big networks, so you'll enjoy the same reliable service at much lower costs.
Our favorite AT&T MVNO is Cricket Wireless. It offers several plans at various prices, including an unlimited plan with perks like HBO Max with ads and cloud storage for $55/month. Not many MVNOs offer streaming perks, so Cricket is a leader on that front. That said, Cricket is owned directly by AT&T, so it doesn’t offer some of the deep discounts that other MVNOs can. However, its partnership does allow for more perks and access to Cricket stores all over the country.
For seniors living in Utah, Consumer Cellular is a good choice because it is one of the few carriers that offers an AARP discount. You’ll also get J.D. Power award-winning customer service and several plans to pick from. One of the best plans for average data users is the Unlimited Talk, Text, and 5GB data plan for $25/month.
Red Pocket is a solid MVNO that operates on all three major networks, including AT&T. Your address will determine which network you are placed on. It has a variety of plans available, but one of its most popular is the $20 Monthly Plan that includes 20GB of high-speed data. It also offers hotspot capability and unlimited minutes to the US and over 80 other countries.
Popular plans on AT&T's network
Cricket and Consumer Cellular are far from the only MVNOs on AT&T’s network in Utah. Check out some of the other popular plans below:
Verizon network coverage in Utah
Verizon offers the most 4G LTE coverage in the nation, but it falls into second place for Utah behind AT&T. Still, if you spend a lot of time traveling outside the state, it's not a bad option. Within the state, Verizon covers 58.55% of Utah with 4G LTE service.
As for the 5G network, Verizon has the smallest coverage area covering just 14.5% of Utah. It’s mostly concentrated in urban areas, so you'll have a great signal in cities. However, once you leave town you'll struggle for 5G service.
Verizon doesn't cover the rugged areas of Utah very well and you'll probably struggle for signal in most national parks. That said, it does cover the majority of the state's highways even when traveling through rural areas.
Best Verizon phone plan
Verizon is a great choice for mobile service in Utah if you live in urban areas. The best Verizon plan overall is its Unlimited Plus plan. It includes unlimited talk, text, and data with an unlimited allotment of premium high-speed data. There’s also a 30GB mobile hotspot allowance with 5G speeds. Plus, you can sign up for various optional perks like the Disney Bundle for just $10/month each.
Best phone plans on Verizon's network
While Verizon offers solid 4G LTE coverage and blisteringly fast 5G, its plans are some of the most expensive on the market once you start adding perks. Luckily, Verizon’s network is served by some of the best MVNOs. Buying a plan with them will help you save big.
The best Verizon MVNO is Visible. It offers two unlimited data plans, including a $25/month option with unlimited talk, text, and data. Plus, Visible offers an unlimited mobile hotspot with speeds capped at 5Mbps.
Twigby Mobile is a solid carrier for those who want to save a ton of money. Its budget-friendly plans vary from talk-and-text-only to unlimited data. Notably, Twigby Mobile delivers some of the most affordable plans available for average data users. Its unlimited plan is just $35/month and includes 20GB of premium data and offers mobile hotspot capability.

T-Mobile network coverage in Utah
T-Mobile ranks in third place for its 4G LTE network, both in Utah and nationwide. It covers 44.86% of the state. That said, it does offer service in the most populated areas.
The carrier takes the lead with its 5G network. It outshines the competition covering 44.88% of the state. T-Mobile's 4G LTE and 5G networks basically overlap. In most cases, if you have a 5G-capable device and a T-Mobile signal, you'll be on the 5G network.
Best T-Mobile phone plans
The top T-Mobile plan is the Experience More option. It offers unlimited talk, text, and data with unlimited premium data. Plus, T-Mobile adds bonus perks like a 60GB mobile hotspot, Netflix and Apple TV+ subscriptions, 4K streaming, and access to T-Mobile’s “New in Two” early phone upgrade program.

Best phone plans on T-Mobile's network
T-Mobile MVNOs can get you access to the best 5G coverage in Utah without paying top-dollar prices.
Our favorite T-Mobile MVNO is Mint Mobile. It offers an unlimited plan for as low as $30/month (but you'll need to pre-pay for service upfront). It includes unlimited talk and text plus 50GB of premium data. There’s also a 20GB mobile hotspot. If you use up your high-speed allotment, youll still have unlimited data, but your speeds may slow during network congestion.
US Mobile is another great T-Mobile MVNO. It offers service on all three networks. There are plenty of plans to choose from, including shared data plans and two excellent unlimited plans. Its highest unlimited option provides truly unlimited premium data with a 50GB mobile hotspot allotment for $44/month. Plus, buying a family plan with three or more Unlimited Premium lines gets you a subscription perk.
Tello is a nice option for customers looking to save a bit more. Its 1GB data plan is one of the cheapest around at just $9/month. We also like its customizable plans for as low as $5/month for a no-data plan. That said, its crowning jewel is an unlimited plan for just $25/month that includes unlimited talk and text with 50GB of premium data. If you use up that allotment your speeds are limited to 2G.
