The name "Utah" originates from the Native American "Ute" tribe, which means "people of the mountains." If you've ever been to Utah, you'll know that's a perfect name. The state is full of scenic ranges from the stone walls of Arches, Canyonlands, and Zion National Parks to the snowcapped Wasatch Mountains around Salt Lake City. Whether you're hiking in the desert or hitting the slopes for some skiing, you'll probably be near a hill of some kind.

AT&T offers the strongest overall coverage in Utah. It includes a strong signal in urban areas and covers a surprising amount of rural, rugged terrain. T-Mobile owns the largest 5G network and offers a solid signal in urban areas, but struggles in rural areas. Verizon is a balanced carrier that has excellent rural 4G LTE coverage and urban 5G coverage.

AT&T provides the most robust 4G LTE coverage in Utah spanning 80.4% of the state. Verizon and T-Mobile have fallen a bit behind covering 58.54% and 44.86% respectively. 

With 5G coverage, the story changes. T-Mobile has the largest 5G network in Utah covering 44.88% of the state. AT&T follows in second covering 30.72% and Verizon brings up the rear covering just 14.5% of the state.

AT&T network coverage in Utah

AT&T offers the largest 4G LTE network in Utah covering 80.4% of the state. For a state with a ton of rugged and rural areas, that's great coverage. The only places where AT&T struggles to give any kind of service are in the southern part of the state around Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and the desert areas of the northwest.

The AT&T 5G network is solid in Utah. It comes in second place behind T-Mobile by covering 30.72% of the state. That may not seem like a lot, but AT&T has coverage in the areas that count. Those are the developed places where most people live, like Salt Lake City, Provo, and tourist towns like Moab.

If you want to use AT&T’s network but don't want to pay top dollar, there are plenty of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) that help you save. These small carriers piggyback off of the big networks, so you'll enjoy the same reliable service at much lower costs.

Our favorite AT&T MVNO is Cricket Wireless. It offers several plans at various prices, including an unlimited plan with perks like HBO Max with ads and cloud storage for $55/month. Not many MVNOs offer streaming perks, so Cricket is a leader on that front. That said, Cricket is owned directly by AT&T, so it doesn’t offer some of the deep discounts that other MVNOs can. However, its partnership does allow for more perks and access to Cricket stores all over the country.

For seniors living in Utah, Consumer Cellular is a good choice because it is one of the few carriers that offers an AARP discount. You’ll also get J.D. Power award-winning customer service and several plans to pick from. One of the best plans for average data users is the Unlimited Talk, Text, and 5GB data plan for $25/month.

Red Pocket is a solid MVNO that operates on all three major networks, including AT&T. Your address will determine which network you are placed on. It has a variety of plans available, but one of its most popular is the $20 Monthly Plan that includes 20GB of high-speed data. Verizon network coverage in Utah

Verizon offers the most 4G LTE coverage in the nation, but it falls into second place for Utah behind AT&T. Still, if you spend a lot of time traveling outside the state, it's not a bad option. Within the state, Verizon covers 58.55% of Utah with 4G LTE service. 

As for the 5G network, Verizon has the smallest coverage area covering just 14.5% of Utah. It’s mostly concentrated in urban areas, so you'll have a great signal in cities. However, once you leave town you'll struggle for 5G service. 

Verizon doesn't cover the rugged areas of Utah very well and you'll probably struggle for signal in most national parks. That said, it does cover the majority of the state's highways even when traveling through rural areas.

The best Verizon MVNO is Visible. It offers two unlimited data plans, including a $25/month option with unlimited talk, text, and data. Plus, Visible offers an unlimited mobile hotspot with speeds capped at 5Mbps. 

Twigby Mobile is a solid carrier for those who want to save a ton of money. Its budget-friendly plans vary from talk-and-text-only to unlimited data. Notably, Twigby Mobile delivers some of the most affordable plans available for average data users. Its unlimited plan is just $35/month and includes 20GB of premium data and offers mobile hotspot capability.

The carrier takes the lead with its 5G network. It outshines the competition covering 44.88% of the state. T-Mobile's 4G LTE and 5G networks basically overlap. In most cases, if you have a 5G-capable device and a T-Mobile signal, you'll be on the 5G network.

Plus, buying a family plan with three or more Unlimited Premium lines gets you a subscription perk. 

Tello is a nice option for customers looking to save a bit more. Its 1GB data plan is one of the cheapest around at just $9/month. We also like its customizable plans for as low as $5/month for a no-data plan. That said, its crowning jewel is an unlimited plan for just $25/month that includes unlimited talk and text with 50GB of premium data. If you use up that allotment your speeds are limited to 2G.
