With glacier-topped volcanos, coastal rainforests, and urban cities, Washington is a dream destination for outdoor and city lovers alike. Of course, the state boasts more than just beauty; as the birthplace of Starbucks, Nirvana, and Amazon, Washington is an icon of culture and innovation. It’s no wonder the Evergreen State is one of the top-ranked places to live.
With a reputation this good, we expect their cell service to measure up. While each of the Big Three major carriers—AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile—has a presence throughout the state, some fare better than others. Ultimately, choosing a carrier will depend on where you need coverage. You can use our coverage check feature to find quality service wherever you are. Simply type in your address, and let us do the rest. From there, you can see a map showing coverage from all three major carriers, plus the available cell phone plans in those places.
Whether you’re making a permanent move to the Emerald City or road-tripping through the Pacific Northwest, we can help you find the coverage you need.About phone coverage in Washington
From the Columbia River to the snow-capped peak of Mount Rainier, Washington will dazzle you with its natural beauty. Unfortunately, enjoying the outdoors might mean sacrificing a strong signal. While the Evergreen state is known for its many National and State Parks, service will be spotty or inaccessible in most of these areas. Thankfully, you can count on reliable 4G (and 5G, depending on the carrier) in all urban areas, including primarily Seattle, Spokane, and Tacoma.
Why it's important to pick the right coverage
Washington is a geographically diverse state, which is great for sightseeing but can prove troublesome when it comes to cell coverage. Whether you’re exploring one of Washington’s infamous National Parks, reliving your teenage Twilight obsession in Forks, or coffee-tasting across Seattle, reliable service is vital.
For tourists and locals alike, having dependable cell coverage means avoiding the inconvenience of a dropped call or a spotty signal. It can also mean staying safe when exploring the flora and fauna of Washington’s majestic wilderness.
Coverage in Washington at a glance
While coverage will be healthy in Washington’s major cities, it’s likely to wane in less populated areas. Where 4G is concerned, AT&T takes the lead, with Verizon not far behind. T-Mobile comes in third place for 4G coverage but tops the others with its 5G reach. AT&T follows closely behind, with Verizon struggling to keep up.

AT&T network coverage in Washington
At 76.53%, AT&T has the broadest 4G reach of any carrier in Washington state. It adequately covers urban areas and most of the tribal lands governed by Washington’s twenty-nine Tribal Nations, as well as a sizable portion of Washington’s majestic wilderness. Outdoor enthusiasts, rest assured that you’ll have coverage as long as you’re not in the heart of Olympic National Park or on the peaks of the Cascade mountain range. However, if you plan to go off-grid, it’s worth mapping your directions ahead of time, as service can be spotty in small rural pockets.
In other news, you can island hop to your heart's content without the threat of spotty service. Whether going to Vashon for the day or renting a house on Whidbey Island, AT&T’s 4G will keep you connected.
AT&T’s 5G has a bit of catching up to do. At 33.21%, Big Blue’s 5G covers two major areas: the urban communities surrounding the Puget Sound Basin (Olympia, Tacoma, Seattle, Everett, and Mount Vernon) and the Eastern Washington region, with Spokane being the most populated. More rural counties, including Grant, Adams, Douglas, Yakima, Stevens, and Benton, are also included within AT&T’s 5G reach.
Best AT&T phone plan
To take advantage of AT&T’s expansive coverage, we recommend the Premium 2.0 plan. For $90/month, you’ll get unlimited premium data (meaning no slowdowns even if the network is busy) on AT&T’s 4G and 5G networks. This plan is undoubtedly pricey, but so are AT&T’s two other unlimited options. If you are going with an expensive plan, you may as well opt for the one offering the most bang for your buck. Consider the additional 60GB of hotspot data, which is an excellent perk for ferry commuters and anyone hoping to work on the go.
If you’re looking for more than one line, you can opt for a family plan and reap additional savings. AT&T’s Unlimited Your Way multiline model lets you mix and match any of its three unlimited options to each of the lines in your family plan, customizing it to fit your family’s needs.
Best phone plans on AT&T's network
Many people don’t realize that they can get the best coverage from AT&T and save money by going with a much more affordable mobile virtual network operator, or MVNO. MVNOs use the same cell towers as the big players but don’t have to pay for upkeep, saving you money. Most MVNOs offer unlimited plans for half the cost of the big carriers, and slowdowns are seldom a problem, particularly if you have reliable access to Wi-Fi.
Cricket Wireless is a great choice if you like a plan with additional perks but still don’t want to pay top-dollar prices. With their $60/month Unlimited + 15GB Mobile Hotspot Plan, you’ll get unlimited premium data that won’t slow down no matter how much you use. You’ll also enjoy a 15GB dedicated hotspot and practical perks like 150GB of cloud storage and HBO Max.
Don’t need all the fluff? You can go even cheaper with one of their low-data plans, starting at $30/month.

Verizon network coverage in Washington
Verizon’s 4G ranks second best across Washington with 65.54% coverage. It’s a solid option for those in Seattle proper but could prove troublesome for Puget Sound commuters. While most of Bremerton and the Olympic Peninsula (save for Olympic National Park) have coverage, you are likely to encounter dead zones on the islands themselves and along the eastern side of Highway 101. East of the Cascade Range, 4G is nearly comprehensive, covering most major cities, including those in rural counties.
At 9.02%, Verizon’s 5G has a ways to go. However, if you live in Seattle, Wenatchee, or Spokane, you can opt for Verizon’s faster speeds depending on your location. For example, although Bellevue has dependable 5G, the Houghton neighborhood in Kirkland has a small dead zone. The same is true for parts of West and East Central Spokane.
Best Verizon phone plan
To enjoy the best from Verizon, we recommend the $80/month Unlimited Plus plan, which includes truly unlimited premium data on Verizon’s fastest 5G Ultra-Wideband network (as opposed to basic 5G on its Nationwide network) and a 30GB hotspot allowance. Although this plan is pricey, you can choose to bundle in streaming and subscription services at a discounted rate. For example, add a Wal-Mart subscription or the Disney bundle each for $10/month extra.
Best phone plans on Verizon's network
For many of us, MVNOs make sense. These smaller carriers often have all we need in a phone plan for a fraction of the price of a big carrier. Verizon shares its network with several notable MVNOs. Our favorite is Visible, with its $25 unlimited hotspot and data plan (less than a third of Verizon’s cheapest unlimited plan!). The only caveats are that you’re limited to Verizon’s Nationwide 5G network (which is quicker than 4G LTE, but not the quickest), and your speeds may slow when the network is busy, but in our first-hand testing, we never experienced a single day of slowdowns.
For access to Verizon’s 5G Ultra-Wideband network with speeds that match Big Red’s Unlimited Plus plan, you can always upgrade to Visible+. It also includes 50GB of premium data and is just $15/month more—which is still $35 cheaper than Verizon’s option.
US Mobile is another dependable MVNO on Verizon’s network. The $50/month Unlimited Premium plan comes with a whopping 100GB of premium data and a 50GB hotspot, putting it up there with many of Verizon’s (pricier) unlimited plans. If you’re looking for a family plan, you can add additional lines for as low as $37.50/line after three lines or more.

T-Mobile network coverage in Washington
At 52.16%, T-Mobile's 4G reach ranks third, with generous coverage in the Puget Sound and Eastern Washington regions (where most people live). Whether navigating the coast or taking the I-90 through central Washington, you shouldn’t worry about a dropped signal. While the rural northeastern cities of Republic, Tonaskit, Coleville, and Chewelah will have coverage, expect it to wane in the surrounding areas.
If 5G is your speed, you can expect nearly the same coverage as on T-Mobile’s 4G network. With 48.48% coverage, you can choose between 4G and 5G in areas where T-Mobile shines. To recap, this includes most urban areas, including prominent cities in rural communities. Just don’t count on coverage in most National and State Parks.
Best T-Mobile phone plan
When it comes to T-Mobile coverage, you don’t need the priciest plan to get the best the carrier has to offer. The $85/month Experience more plan has all you need from a top-tier unlimited plan without maxing out your wallet. With Experience More, you’ll get unlimited premium data, a 60GB hotspot data, and perks including subscriptions to Netflix and Apple TV+, as well as a one-year AAA membership—perfect for a road trip through the Pacific Northwest.
Best phone plans on T-Mobile's network
Our favorite MVNO running on T-Mobile’s network is Mint Mobile. Mint’s Unlimited plan offers 40GB of premium data plus a 10GB hotspot for as low as $30/month for the first three months Mint sells its plans in multi-month packages—3-, 6-, and 12-month plans paid upfront. Renewing for a full year locks in that low price of $30/month ($360 total); otherwise, you can renew for six months ($35/month) or three months ($40/month). After the first three months, your renewal price goes up. Any way you slice it, you will save in the long run, as T-Mobile’s Experience More plan totals out at $1,020 per year.
Tello is another great MVNO on T-Mobile’s network. For unlimited coverage, we recommend the $25/month Unlimited data plan, which includes 35GB of premium data, a 5GB hotspot, and free international calling to over 60+ countries.
If you’re looking for a pocket-friendly family plan, we love Tello for its customizable plans starting at $8/line for unlimited calling and texting. This no-data plan is perfect for children or grandparents who only need basic cell service.
