Mint Mobile and Visible are two of the most popular MVNOs in the nation. These smaller carriers offer discounted plans on the major carrier’s networks, helping customers save on their phone service. Mint and Visible are owned by T-Mobile and Verizon respectively, meaning customers can expect excellent coverage when they sign up for a plan.

Both carriers offer discounted unlimited plans and widespread coverage. After a month of hands-on testing, we think Visible offers a bit more value due to its lower prices and unlimited mobile hotspot feature.

That said, Mint Mobile is still a strong contender, and we’ve found both carriers’ positives and pain points for potential customers:

  • Visible is the best carrier for customers looking for a cheaper plan or large mobile hotspot allotment.
  • Mint Mobile is best for customers who need widespread 5G coverage and family plans.

Let’s dive into the details of Visible and Mint Mobile to help you determine which carrier is right for you.

Which carrier is better?

Both carriers offer rock-bottom pricing on unlimited plans and excellent 5G data speeds. That said, Visible is cheaper and offers a bit more value. For just $25/month, you can get unlimited data on Verizon’s 5G network (subject to slower speeds during network congestion) and a truly unlimited mobile hotspot with speeds capped at 5Mbps.

On the other hand, Mint does undercut Visible in one main area: Mint Mobile offers family plans and Visible does not. In fact, Mint’s multi-line discount knocks the pricing down to the lowest available cost on each line no matter how long your plan is, making it one of the best MVNO options for family plans.

Which is best for you depends on your needs and which network you prefer, but Visible does hold a slight edge with its unlimited plans.

Reviews and ratings: How we scored Mint Mobile and Visible

At WhistleOut, we review all carriers using the same five criteria: price, value, speed, coverage, and customer service. Each is evaluated on a 5-star scale to calculate the carrier's overall rating.

Mint Mobile's rating details

Mint Mobile offers excellent data speeds at an affordable price. Our UX analyst Angelo Ilumba tested Mint’s Unlimited plan for a month and noted he saw data speeds as fast as 600Mbps, which is excellent for a plan only costing $30/month ($15/month if you opt for the 12-month plan). However, he sometimes struggled to find a signal in remote locations. Overall, he felt Mint is a great value if you live in an area with a strong T-Mobile signal.

You can read about Angelo’s full experience and see the results of his network testing in our Mint Mobile review.

Visible's rating details

Visible’s unlimited plans offer some of the cheapest options you’ll find to hook up to Verizon’s network. Angelo also spent a month testing Visible where he noted that he was extremely impressed with the Visible plan’s value. For just $25/month, customers can get unlimited 5G data on Verizon’s network and an unlimited mobile hotspot. That said, he pointed out some important caveats, including that his data speeds were generally slower than Verizon’s native plans and that Visible caps the speed of the unlimited hotspot feature at 5Mbps.

Mint Mobile vs. Visible: Plan prices and value

Both Mint and Visible offer prepaid unlimited plans at similar pricing. That said, there are some major differences in how each carrier operates and the full selection of plans.

Mint Mobile offers four prepaid plans stretching from 6GB to unlimited data (which is actually 50GB premium data and unlimited data at potentially slower speeds after). The 6GB plan starts at $15/month and Unlimited starts at $30/month. Note that Mint’s plans are only available in 3-, 6-, and 12-month blocks, and you must pay the full price upfront. That means the Mint Unlimited 3-month plan actually costs $90. That pricing is also tied to a 3-month introductory deal. However, if you opt for the 12-month plan off the bat, you will only pay $180 ($15/month) for Mint's Unlimited plan.

Visible offers three plans, all of which give you unlimited data. The basic Visible plan starts at $25/month and offers unlimited data (subject to slowing during network congestion) and an unlimited mobile hotspot with speeds capped at 5Mbps. The Visible+ plan is $35/month and offers unlimited premium data and an unlimited mobile hotspot with speeds capped at 10Mbps. The Visible+ Pro plan also includes unlimited premium data, and has faster hotspot speeds capped at 15Mbps.

Why are Mint and Visible so cheap?

Short answer: Neither carrier owns its own network. Mint runs on T-Mobile, and Visible runs on Verizon, which cuts a huge chunk of cost out of the equation. Both also don't have physical stores, in-person reps, or retail overhead. You sign up online, manage your account in an app, and contact support by chat or phone.

Mint pushes savings further by requiring upfront payment for 3, 6, or 12 months at a time. That locks in the lowest rate and trims billing costs. We break it down further in our Mint guide.

Visible takes a different angle. No upfront payment, no contracts, and a stripped-down plan lineup. The simpler the product, the cheaper it is to run.

Unlimited data plans

Comparing unlimited plans, it’s clear that Visible has an advantage over Mint. The $25/month Visible plan offers truly unlimited data and mobile hotspot at a cheaper price than the $30/month Mint Unlimited plan. That said, there are better options for around the same cost, including the Visible+ or Visible+ Pro plan.

Angelo’s experience with Visible's unlimited plan

Angelo Ilumba

Angelo was impressed with the value of the Visible plan:

"Visible’s base plan offers excellent value at $25/month. The plan's simplicity and lack of hidden fees (it really is just $25/month) make it an attractive option for budget-conscious consumers.”

Learn more in his full Visible review.

The Visible+ plan starts at $35/month, which is slightly more expensive than Mint Unlimited, but it includes much more data and mobile hotspot for that extra $5/month. Visible+ includes unlimited premium data and an unlimited mobile hotspot with speeds capped at 10Mbps, while Visible+ Pro has hotspot speeds capped at 15Mbps.

Mint can offer more value if customers are willing to pay for a 12-month plan or join a family plan (which provides the 12-month pricing). For customers who prefer to pay by the month—or who can’t afford to pay for the entire plan upfront—Visible is the budget-friendly option.

Plan perks

You won’t find many perks from Mint Mobile or Visible. As discounted carriers, their goal is to provide the cheapest service they can, so they typically don’t offer extra features like streaming subscriptions.

Both do offer limited international features, like calling and texting to Mexico and Canada. Mint Mobile also offers 3GB of roaming data in Canada and Visible offers a free Global Pass day of international roaming with the Visible+ plan, or two with the Visible+ Pro plan.

Family plans

Both carriers offer multi-line discounts, but they work very differently.

The Mint Mobile Modern Family Plan allows customers to select any of Mint’s plans and get the lowest possible price per line no matter the length of your plan. It’s one of the best multi-line discounts you’ll find with any MVNO.

Visible's multi-line program, Inner Circle, launched in August 2025. Up to seven Visible customers can link their individual accounts to get $5/month off each line. Each member keeps their own account, bill, and personal information, with no primary account holder. The only thing to keep in mind, Inner Circle only works on Visible+ and Visible+ Pro. The $25 base Visible plan isn't eligible.

Mint Mobile vs. Visible network coverage and speeds

Since Mint Mobile and Visible are owned outright by major phone carriers, you can rest assured you’ll have excellent coverage. Of course, each carrier has strengths in certain areas. Visible has more widespread coverage but slower speeds. Mint Mobile offers a larger 5G network, but it struggles to offer coverage in rural areas.

4G LTE coverage

Visible offers coverage from Verizon, the undisputed king of 4G LTE. Covering 70% of the country, it has a larger network than both AT&T and T-Mobile. During his testing of Visible’s network, Angelo had excellent connectivity with download speeds up to 300Mbps, which was plenty fast enough for him to browse and stream on his smartphone. Because 4G LTE is still the predominant network in the U.S., Visible’s access to Verizon gives it an edge for customers in rural and suburban areas.

5G coverage

T-Mobile coverage map

Mint Mobile uses T-Mobile, which offers the largest 5G network of any carrier, covering a whopping 53% of the country. Verizon and Visible trail with 5G coverage at just 12.77%. While Verizon’s coverage is often faster because it relies on ultra-wideband signals, it’s still limited in most places. If you live in an urban area or city with solid T-Mobile service, Mint Mobile is the best option for 5G access and consistently fast speeds.

Angelo's experience with Mint Mobile's coverage

Angelo Ilumba

Angeo had a great experience with Mint’s data speeds, but he wasn’t always happy with his coverage.

“I never saw speeds dip down below 200Mbps, with peak speeds reaching as fast as 600Mbps. I was able to stream videos, play games, and download large files without a hitch. The only times I really had bandwidth issues were those rare instances in remote areas when a signal wasn't great (or non-existent).”

Customer service

The customer service for Mint Mobile and Visible is great, but you’re limited to online chats and phone calls. Neither carrier offers in-person help from a physical store.

In his Mint Mobile review, Angelo noted, “I tried their online chat and phone support. Mint was quick to respond each time, so I was pretty satisfied.”

As for Visible, Angelo wrote: “My interactions with their support team were positive; I received prompt and helpful responses when I asked for assistance with making sure my phone was compatible with Visible’s services (it turns out I just needed to update it).”

Bottom line: Visible’s pricing vs. Mint’s 5G coverage

Both Mint and Visible are excellent choices for service, but which one is best for you depends on your needs.

If budget is your main concern, Visible is the best choice. The Visible plan starts at $25/month and offers unlimited data and an unlimited mobile hotspot, which is plenty for most customers. Even with Mint Unlimited’s introductory pricing of $30/month, Visible is still cheaper for unlimited data.

Mint Mobile is the better choice if you need a family plan or value widespread 5G coverage. The multi-line discount of Mint’s Modern Family Plan means that customers can expect the lowest pricing available on every line, no matter the length of the plan. As for coverage, Mint Mobile uses the T-Mobile network, meaning customers have access to the largest 5G network in the nation and extremely fast speeds.

Should You Switch to Mint Mobile or Visible?

If you've made your decision, here's what to expect when you make the switch.

Both carriers keep things simple. You'll need an unlocked phone that's paid off, your account number and PIN from your current carrier, and a few minutes to port your number. Mint and Visible both handle activation online, so there's no store visit required.

So which carrier is worth sticking with long-term? Two of our WhistleOut staffers liked Mint enough to switch permanently after testing it. Once you've paid $360 upfront for a full year of unlimited data, going back to a postpaid carrier is a tough sell. The family plan discount makes it even harder to leave.

Visible's pitch is different. There's no contract, no intro pricing that jumps at renewal, and no annual decision to make. You pay $25/month, and that's the deal. And for one of our writers, that's part of what pushed her to make the switch.

Jessica's experience with Mint

Jessica Santero

Jessica started on Mint Mobile but switched to Visible after running into coverage and pricing issues.

“My experience with Mint Mobile left me unsatisfied with both the long-term pricing and coverage gaps in my area, so I decided to switch to Visible. Plus, Visible’s perks are much better than Mint’s. I can confidently say that after over a year of service with Visible, I couldn't be happier."

Long-term value depends on your situation. Mint is cheaper in year one and the better choice for families. But after the intro period ends, Mint Unlimited renews at $30/month while Visible stays at $25. For a single line you plan to keep for years, Visible's flat pricing wins out.

How WhistleOut rates cell phone plans

WhistleOut evaluates phone plans based on the following criteria:

  • Price & value: Not all cheap plans are “bad,” and not all expensive plans are worth it. We look at everything a plan includes and compare it both to other plans from the same carrier, as well as similar plans from competitors in the market, to determine whether the value is consistent with the price.
  • High-speed data: Also called “premium” data, this is how much data you get at full 4G/5G speeds before they can or will slow down. The more guaranteed high-speed data the plan includes, the better experience you’ll generally have—but there’s also usually a limit to how much you actually need, and we ensure that you’re not overpaying for data that will go unused.
  • Coverage & network reliability: The breadth of each carrier’s 4G LTE and 5G networks determines your reception and service. Particularly in the case of 5G, some carriers offer far more robust coverage than others, which affects how their phone plans perform in different parts of the country.
  • Plan extras and perks: In addition to the basics—talk, text, and data—some plans throw in freebies like hotspot allowances, cloud storage, entertainment subscriptions, or service discounts.

Our mobile expert tested Mint Mobile and Visible for at least a month each, in addition to leveraging proprietary data and real-world customer feedback. We compared the two carriers by analyzing their coverage, cost, and plan options. We considered plan-specific elements, including perks, premium data allowances, and mobile hotspot allocations. After performing hands-on testing and extensive research, we picked the best carrier we felt meets the needs of most people where we were able—in some areas, each carrier stacked up equally. We only compared Mint Mobile vs. Visible; no other carriers, big or small, were included in our examination.
