- Follow the device unlocking instructions specific to your phone type.
T-Mobile makes it pretty simple to unlock your smartphone or connected device before switching to a different carrier or using a global SIM on your travels.
Steps vary based on what kind of device you own, and you'll first need to meet some specific eligibility requirements. Here's how to unlock your T-Mobile phone.
T-Mobile's Unlocking Requirements
Before you can start the unlocking process, you'll need to first meet T-Mobile's phone unlock eligibility requirements:
- You must have bought your phone from T-Mobile.
- Your account must active and in good standing.
- For postpaid accounts, your phone must have been active for at least 40 days.
- For prepaid phones, it must have been active for at least the last year, unless you've already reached $100 or more in refills for all lines on your account.
- Your phone must be fully paid off, if you purchased it via installments.
- Your IMEI isn't blocked.
- This happens if the phone has been reported as lost or stolen, or if the device's installment plan shows payment delinquency.
Unlocking exemptions for U.S. military members
For active-duty military members on overseas deployment, T-Mobile allows you to bypass some of these requirements to unlock your phone, as long as your account is in good standing. You'll need to provide proof of deployment, i.e., your TCS or PCS paperwork.

How to Unlock Your T-Mobile Phone
T-Mobile has different phone unlocking processes based on which kind of operating system your phone runs on. For all devices, though, you'll first need to complete these steps:
- Find your phone's IMEI number. (Need help? Jump down to our FAQs for info.)
- Obtain a new SIM from the carrier you're switching to (if applicable).
- Have your account information ready, including your account number.
- Call T-Mobile's customer care department to provide your information and begin the unlocking process.
- Look for a confirmation email once T-Mobile has approved your unlock request.
This is where the steps to unlock your T-Mobile phone diverge based on whether you have an Android, iPhone, or other wireless device—let's find your phone below for specifics.
Unlocking a T-Mobile iPhone
After receiving your confirmation email, backup your iPhone—not only is this just a smart thing to do, but you may need it if you don't receive the right prompt or if you don't have a SIM to insert into your phone.
If you do have a new, non-T-Mobile SIM card, do the following:
- Power off your iPhone.
- Insert the new SIM into your phone.
- Turn your phone back on, and follow the prompts for "first-time use."
- Sign back into your Apple ID.
If you don't receive the set-up prompts, or you don't have a separate SIM card from your new carrier:
- Erase your iPhone after backing it up.
- Restore your phone from your backup.
Unlocking a T-Mobile Android Phone
Once you've received your unlock confirmation email, make sure your Android phone is connected to the internet. Then do the following:
- Samsung devices: In your Settings app, find the Connections menu, then choose More Connection Settings. Older Samsung phones may have a native Device Unlock app that's already installed—use this app instead.
- Google phones: Download the T-Mobile Device Unlock app, if it isn't already installed on your phone.
- OnePlus devices: In your Settings app, enter the Wi-Fi & Internet menu, and select SIM & Network.
- T-Mobile devices: In your Settings app, choose the Network & Internet menu; under Mobile Network, select Advanced.
Once you've found the right menu for your device, here's how to complete your T-Mobile device unlock:
- Choose Network Unlock, then select Permanent Unlock.
- Wait while your phone goes through the unlock process.
- Once the process is complete, restart your phone.
Unlocking Other Devices on T-Mobile
If your phone doesn't run on either Android or iOS, the unlocking process will vary. T-Mobile offers specific guides for the majority of the most popular smartphones and connected devices.
Find your phone in T-Mobile's support portal, then scroll to the "How Tos" section and click on Security. Find the Mobile Device Unlock guide and follow the directions outlined for you.
If your phone isn't listed among T-Mobile's supported devices, contact the carrier for help.
Check Your Device Unlock Status
It's a good idea to check your phone's unlock status both before and after the unlocking process. Log into your T-Mobile account from a computer or browser—the T-Mobile app doesn't currently support a status check. Once you're logged in, head to your account and choose the line you're interested in checking. Under your device details, you can check your unlock status to see whether you're still tied to T-Mobile's network.
Why Unlock a T-Mobile Phone?
There are two main reasons why you may want to unlock your phone from T-Mobile's network: to travel internationally or to switch to another carrier.
Switching Carriers
Unlocking your T-Mobile phone also allows you to change carriers and bring your own device with you. That way, you won't have to shell out additional money for a new phone—especially if you love the one you already have.
However, your phone needs to be compatible with your new wireless network—and not all carriers use the same network technology. If you're switching your unlocked T-Mobile phone to AT&T's, you shouldn't have any issues. Both carriers run their networks on GSM technology, so once your phone is unlocked, just pop in your new AT&T SIM card and you'll be up and running.
Verizon, on the other hand, uses the CDMA standard, making it less of a sure bet that your phone will work seamlessly. Still, most new smartphones are designed to operate on any network technology, so if you've purchased your phone in the last few years, you likely have no worries. Plus, T-Mobile and Verizon use the same 4G LTE spectrum, making it even more likely that your connection should be fine. You might just have issues if you're forced to use Verizon's 3G network in absence of a 4G LTE signal.
Don't forget—you can also also freely use your unlocked device on one of the many MVNOs that run on the T-Mobile network.
Take your unlocked T-Mobile phone to Mint Mobile
Many people don't realize they can save on a phone plan and still get T-Mobile coverage with an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator). These carriers use the same towers but don't have to pay for the upkeep costs, thereby passing the savings on to you. Where most free phones from T-Mobile require a new line (or upgrade) on one of their priciest phone plans, an MVNO like Mint Mobile has plans starting as low as $15/month.
With Mint Mobile, you'll get the nation's best 5G (with up to 40GB of guaranteed high speeds), plus unlimited talk, text, and data for a third of the cost of a T-Mobile unlimited plan. And if you take your newly unlocked T-Mobile phone to Mint Mobile, you'll save on monthly installment plan costs.
International Travel
You may also want to unlock your T-Mobile phone in order to use a travel SIM card. Swapping in a global or travel SIM card connects you to a local wireless network, eliminating the need to incur roaming charges or pay international calling rates.
However, T-Mobile's Experience plans are some of the best around for their international benefits, so you may not even need a travel SIM. Experience Beyond includes free international texting; unlimited talk, text, and data in Canada and Mexico; and unlimited international data in over 215+ countries.
Bringing an Unlocked Phone to T-Mobile
If you're thinking of jumping over to T-Mobile's network, first make sure your phone is unlocked from your current carrier. T-Mobile can't unlock phones that weren't purchased directly from them.
Once your phone is unlocked, visit T-Mobile's bring your own device portal to learn how to activate your phone on their network. You can even keep your current phone number, making it super easy to switch. Then choose your favorite T-Mobile plan and you're on your way!
