Kanopy is a completely free streaming service available to anyone with a library card from a participating branch—and it's ad-free. It's the only app among the best free streaming apps list where you won't see a single commercial, and the catalog is stacked with critically acclaimed films you'd normally have to pay to rent elsewhere.
Most people have no idea Kanopy exists. If your local library is connected, then you already have access to stream without paying a cent. You might as well use it.

What is Kanopy?
Kanopy is a free streaming service funded through library licensing agreements rather than advertising. That's why it has no ads at all. Your public library pays for the content on your behalf, and you access it by linking your library card to a free Kanopy account.
You can use Kanopy on iOS, Android, web, Roku, Apple TV, and Chromecast.
Most major U.S. public library systems are connected, but not all of them. It takes about two minutes to check. Download the Kanopy app, enter your library name, and it'll tell you immediately whether your branch participates.
Not sure how to update your apps?
Keeping your apps up to date ensures you're always getting the latest features, bug fixes, and security improvements. Learn how to update the apps on your iPhone and your Android. It takes less time than you think.
What's in the catalog
Kanopy's library includes critically acclaimed independent films, foreign cinema, classic Hollywood, and documentaries. Oscar nominees and winners show up regularly, including titles you'd normally pay to rent on Amazon or Apple TV. It's the kind of catalog you'd expect if your public library built a streaming service, with educational undertones.

If you're not sure what to watch, Kanopy's own Staff Picks lists are a good starting point. I watched the 2015 Academy Award winner for Best Live Action Short Film without waiting for it to become available anywhere else. It was just there, free, no waitlist.
But, how do I rent the movies?
Kanopy runs on a monthly ticket system, so make sure you understand how it works before trying to rent something an hour into movie night. Your library gives you a set number of tickets each month, typically somewhere between 5–25, depending on your library's budget.
Each film you start costs one ticket. Once you press play, you have 72 hours to watch it as many times as you want without using any additional tickets. Once the 72-hour period closes, it automatically returns to the library and moves on to the next person in line.
You'll have more than enough time to watch most films, and your ticket limit resets every month. For casual viewers watching a handful of films a month, you'll likely never run out. The limit exists because libraries pay per stream, so Kanopy has to put some structure around usage.

- Enter the verification code you receive via SMS.
- Browse the catalog and start streaming.
The setup takes about two minutes. If your library isn't on the list, Kanopy doesn't offer a paid alternative, so availability really does depend on where you live. Most major U.S. cities are covered, so check just in case.
